Part 3: Fat, Fun Winter Events

What is all the hubbub about Fatbiking?  Well it’s winter and it’s an El Nino year.  Not just any El Nino mind you, the strongest EVER measured (in like 100 years!) bringing plenty of early snow.  Fat biking has exploded and there are plenty of fun and diverse events popping up all over the country.

Many options are out there for the fat bike enthusiast, including long distance, point to point sufferfests, multi lap team and solo events, weekly series and even fat bike enduros.  You can also take part in extreme downhill events, tailgating type parties with food and libations as well as fat bike summits, demos and festivals.  With fat biking getting more and more popular there is no reason not to enjoy a bike all year long.  Plus, who doesn’t need another bike, right?

Eric Greenwood, our favorite brother, Ogden, Utah.

Eric Greenwood recommends:

The Frosty’s Fat Bike Race Series. Last year they held a race at Powder Mountain a couple of weeks before the first ever USA cycling national fatbike championships.  The course featured big berms and jumps, as well as a singletrack section through the trees. The course was tough because of the high winds we had that day.  For 2015 they will feature 6 races in January and February.

The Iditarod Trail Invitational in Alaska is another event that I would love to do. They race along the Iditarod Sled Dog course with the longest going 1000 miles from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska. (Sounds super fun to us Eric, note the sarcasm!)

The 2nd annual National Fat Bike Championships are in Ogden, Utah again this year.  Get on it for a chance to wear the stars and stripes!  The champ race will head to Michigan for 2017 and 2018.

Rachel Alter from Gunnison, Colorado

Rachel Alter recommends:  The Silverton Whiteout – a 10 hour lap race in Silverton, CO the first weekend in Feb.  “It was super super fun!  Competitive, but still relaxed, fun, and I wore fairy wings for 10 hours straight and drank at least as much PBR as water (not a good idea.)” –Rachel

The last weekend in January this year is Fat Bike Worlds in Crested Butte, CO.  It is going to be an amazing series of events with several options for races, a summit on the growing sport, lots of vendor expo excitement, and tons of food and beer sponsored by Odell Brewing.

Rebecca Rusch, the Queen of Pain, Ketchum, Idaho

Rebecca Rusch Recommends:

Bigwood Fat Bike Park–  This is an all new fat bike park in Ketchum, Idaho on the snowy greens of the Bigwood Golf Course.  Bigwood has just under six miles of fat biking trails, rental bikes for both adults and kids, snowshoe trails, sledding hills, and a great clubhouse stacked with snacks, drinks, beer and wine.  Bigwood stays open late on Wednesday and Friday nights for people to night ride and we are planning a lot of great events- including gear clinics, ladies rides, races, and bike demo opportunities.

Snowball Special Fat Bike Race– On January 31st, Wood River Bike Coalition’s fat bike group, FBAG (fat bike advocacy group) will host the second annual Snowball Special Fat Bike Race on the nordic trails in Sun Valley, Idaho.  As an opening event to the famous Nordic Festival, the fat bike race will consist of 20k, 40k, and 40k relay race distances and great prizes from Jen Biondi’s Upcycle will be given to the podium winners.

Lee Hart Recommends and is hosting:

Inaugural Chugach Fat Bike Bash March 18 – 20 in Valdez, Alaska.  This weekend will feature a little something for everyone from fun-loving fatties to cross-country specialists, a family-friendly all skills welcome fat bike rodeo and the debut of the Fat Bike Vertical World Championships – think red bull rampage on snow.
