For the next part of our New Zealand adventure we headed up the east coast of the south island stopping into to see some little blue penguins waddle up the beach before arriving at our favorite destination of our NZ trip. NELSON!

Nelson lies on the northern tip of the south island. Part of our fondness for this town was by luck though. We stumbled into the owner of Helibike Nelson – Steve who graciously invited us on a locals only ride that turned out to be the highlight of our trip…. as Steve told us it would be. He was right. The ride was a helibike drop to the top of Old Ghost Road which is supposedly New Zealand’s longest piece of singletrack at 85K.
Nelson seemed to have everything from big mountain helibike rides to in town flow trails that spiderwebbed into some the most gnarly, steep and rooty terrain we’ve seen outside of BC. The trails we ended up liking best were accessible right from downtown Nelson.

If we’re given the opportunity again, we will definitely plan more time on the south island and in Nelson specifically. The south island just fit more of what we like in riding: big mountains, big adventures and remote terrain. Next, we’ll be heading up to the north island and Rotorua.[/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]
